Classic Guitar
Introductory Lesson

Hello and welcome to my Classic Guitar page. Since you here I'll assume you already know a little about the guitar. Without going into a lot of detail about technique I'll try to outline the basics and keep things simple. If you are really interested in the Classic Guitar you should seek out a qualified teacher. Proper instruction is the key to success.

I teach in St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada. If you live in my area I can be reached at 905-687-7480, Monday to Friday. Ask for Steve.

Right hand fingering:
p=thumb
i=index
m=middle
a=ring

String Names:(Bottom to top)
E=1st string
B=2nd string
G=3rd string
D=4th string
A=5th string
E=6th string

Holding the guitar:
While in a seated position your left leg should be elevated from the floor about six inches. Place the guitar on your left leg. It should be at a 45 degree angle to the floor.

Playing the guitar:
Begin by resting your right thumb on top or 6th string to help steady your hand. Now pluck the bottom or first string with your index finger. This note is called "e". Now play "e" twice. Once with your index and once with your middle finger (i,m). While playing, try to keep a steady even beat like the sound of a clock ticking. Repeat this on all six strings. Remember alternate your index and middle fingers and keep an even beat.

Once you get the feel for alternating your "i" and "m" fingers try alternating your "m" and "a" fingers. It's a little more difficult.

Study No 1: Alternate i m, then try m a.
(1st string) E hold it long E hold it long
(2nd string) B hold it long B hold it long
(3rd string) G hold it long G hold it long
(4th string) D hold it long D hold it long
(5th string) A hold it long A hold it long
(6th string) E hold it long E hold it long

TIP:
Saying the words "E hold it long" out loud as you play will help you get the feel for a steady beat and memorize the names of the strings.

THEORY:
To get started on the right track be sure and check out my Note Reading, Counting, and Tablature pages.

Well that's it for now. Check back often. I'll be adding new lessons regularly.
