Stringing Tips
Installing New Strings - Electric or Accoustic

Start by looking carefully at how the strings are attached. You may need tools such as an Allen key or a screwdriver to remove them. Once the strings are off it is a great time to clean your fingerboard. Use very fine steel wool and rub up and down the fingerboard lengthwise not across the width. Be careful to do only the fingerboard. Do not use steel wool on maple necks. Instead, clean with a warm water and mild soap mixture.

Note: For electric guitars cover the pick ups so the steel wool particles don't stick to them. They're magnetic.

Now use lemon oil on the fingerboard. You can buy it at any hardware store. Allow it to soak in for about ten minutes then wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. Avoid using cleaning products that contain alcohol or ammonia, as they tend to dry out wood.

The next step varies because there are many different bridge set ups used by manufacturers. Determine how the string is attached to the bridge.

Most accoustic guitars utilize bridge pins. Place the ball end of the string into the correct hole in the bridge. Then place the pin into the hole making certain the bottom of the pin is in contact with the string ball. Insert the other end of the string through the post

To ensure the strings don't slip back through the tuning post hole you'll need at least three wraps around each post. Start by inserting the string through the post. Leave enough slack to get four fingers between the string and the neck. Now make a 90-degree bend in the string past the post. With one hand keeping tension on the string begin winding, making certain the wraps do not overlap each other. Never tie a knot in a string. This weakens the string and it will break. Tune to pitch and trim the excess string ends with pliers.

Start with the 6th string. Insert one end through the bridge allowing about 3 inches of string to extend beyond the bridge. Next bend the string around itself and wrap the end around three times. The last wrap should extend over the edge of the bridge.

Now insert the other end through the correct post. Loop the string around itself passing the loose end under the main part of the string. With one hand keeping tension on the string begin winding, making certain it wraps over the loose end to prevent slippage. Tune to pitch and trim the excess string ends with pliers.
